These heaps of stones are found in different parts of Argentina and Latin America. It is a very old custom of our indigenous peoples, which remains to this day.
Currently the Andean peasants erect them to honor the Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) at certain points along the way through the mountain range. They sometimes leave food and also coca leaves and clothes. Apachetas represent a kind of spiritual inn for hikers.
Sometimes the Apacheta consists of just one large white stone, a preferred color among the indigenous peoples for some unknown symbolic reason, or just for its visibility.
